Investing in People – Apprenticeships

Investing in People : Apprenticeships

Bemodern Logo have been manufacturing fires and fireplaces in the North East of England for over 50 years and are strong believers in giving back to the community that has supported them.

Unemployment is a cause for concern in South Tyneside, as it is for most UK counties. Lack of opportunity to gain relevant working experience, especially for young people, is one of the main criticisms from some of the 5,035 people who are currently looking for work locally.

Apprenticeships are a superb way to involve people who want to work and learn in the workplace, this is why Be Modern recently employed 24 year old Samantha Taylor from Jarrow.

We met with Samantha to talk about her experience so far.

Q. Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
A. There is not a wealth of jobs locally and with most employers looking for experienced staff it is difficult to secure an interview. I decided to pursue an apprenticeship to develop my experience whilst also gaining a higher qualification.

Samantha understands the benefits of apprenticeship schemes having previously completed a year course with the Princes Trust gaining a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 in Business Administration.

Q. Why did Be Modern appeal to you as a place to work?
A. I was looking for a established local company who would invest in my development and who I thought I could be an asset to.

The company saw Samantha’s potential and eagerness to learn and she was employed to join the sales team in June 2014.

“It is good that companies are willing to take a chance on apprentices as it is hard to get an opportunity work without experience.”

Q. How are you finding your apprenticeship so far?
A. I really like it. The team are so friendly and welcoming and it is amazing how quickly everyone has gained trust in me to progress my job role.

Samantha has adapted well to fit into the busy department, interacting with customers and processing orders and delivery bookings.

“Being part of a welcoming and supportive team is important.”

As well as gaining valuable experience Samantha will also obtain an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration and complete various examinations and observations including ICT, literacy and numeracy, problem solving and decision making.

Over the next year, Be Modern will support Samantha in her development and learning as she gains that all important experience.

“It is essential that companies take a chance on apprentices to allow them to develop valuable key skills.”

Q. What career aspirations do you have for the future?
A. I would like to progress onto the NVQ Level 4 in Business Administration with Be Modern and hopefully move into accountancy in the future.

Be Modern are proud to support her in her journey.
