Be Modern employees search for sustainability
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. Each year FSC® celebrate FSC Friday®, a worldwide event to raise awareness of the importance of working with responsibly sourced wood products with a view to sustain our forests, the habitats that they provide for wildlife and the honest livelihood of those who work responsibly within them.
FSC® helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife who call them home and is recognised by WWF as the “hallmark of responsible forest management”.
FSC® Friday is a great opportunity to inform and educate people of the value of the organisation and the vital role forests play in our lives. It is a chance to increase awareness and encourage people to look for the FSC logo in our everyday lives. Over the years we have visited schools across the region to educate the students of this important message; we have planted trees and even spent a day with one of our timber merchants following the process from start to finish.
This year we have asked some of our employees to evaluate how often they see the FSC® logo as they go about their daily routines at work, home and even during their weekly grocery shopping! Research conducted on behalf of the GFK organisation found that 50% of people recognise the green tick and although the market for responsibly sourced timber and timber products is growing, we want to help it grow further.
Competing employees searched high and low, visiting shops and raiding their cupboards. One employee commented “I was pleasantly surprised by how many household items I found that had the FSC® logo, including my book of stamps!” It proved to be an eye opening experience as they also added “I’m definitely more aware of what the logo represents and think I would make a conscious effort in the future to select products which had been printed or produced with FSC material.”
In comparison, an employee who had a less successful search for the FSC® logo stated that it made her think differently about her favourite brands, “Now that I know which brands are and are not FSC approved, I will be making different selections in the future and encourage my friends to do the same”.
The FSC® label is found on wood and paper products as well as non-timber forest products such as latex. You can find the FSC logo on flooring, decking, paper, printed matter, charcoal, and even kitchen utensils. Competition was steep, but the winner of the FSC Tick challenge was able to find thirty six tick logos across a wide range of items, explaining “I found a lot of FSC approved pieces while visiting the store of one of our national retailers”.
Be Modern are proud to source as much FSC® material as possible in our manufacturing of fireplaces, bathroom and bedroom furniture and hold a chain of custody certificate with FSC, allowing us to trace our timber back to where it was grown and harvested.
As a business we understand the importance of using sustainable resources in our manufacturing processes; not only does it ensure that there will be material for years to come, but it also means we are using a responsibly grown, harvested and treated product that our customers can rely on. This year we spread even more awareness to our employees as individuals so that we can continue to make a difference in our everyday life.
